  • Institution Nationale des Jeunes Aveugles

    Institution Nationale des Jeunes Aveugles
    Institution Nationale des Juenes Aveugles is founded as the first special school for blind students. Louis Braille was the creator of the Braille system where students learned how to read using this system. Later on the institute moved into a new and bigger building.

    Thomas Gallaudet's life changed when he met a Deaf girl named Alice Cogswell. This inspired Gallaudet and he opened the first school in the US for the Deaf located in Connecticut. Later on the University had a hearing president, this took the students to act. During this time the movement DPN (Deaf President Now) led to the University first president. Gallaudet University became a home for Deaf students where ASL is their priority and main focus.

    The first Special Education programs were created in 1890 for children who live in poorer areas. These urban school programs offered moral training and social values. Children learned work such as sewing, cooking, and other hands on works.
  • Education for All Citizens

    Education for All Citizens
    In the year 1918 all the states recognize the right for education to all citizens. This Act was Fisher's contribution due to his concern about the education. This act allowed students to have an education.
  • CEC

    CEC
    In 1922 the Council for Exceptional Children was organized and founded by Elizabeth E. Farrell. The Council began with only 12 members and their main focus was to provide laws that protected children with disabilities. This act defined an important roll to special needs education today.
  • Social Security Act

    Social Security Act
    The Social Security Act was founded in 1935. However, it allowed blind people in Social Security Act a year later. This was sign by the President Roosevelt.
  • Elementary and Secondary Education Act

    Elementary and Secondary Education Act
    The Elementary and Secondary Education Act was signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson. This law was designed to provide funds for students with disabilities. This law also helped the students that came from a low income family to have access to education.
  • American with Disabilities Act

    American with Disabilities Act
    The American with Disabilities Act was a law signed that banned discrimination towards disability. This law also provided people with disability were more involved in the regular activities of life without being set aside. This included job area, shopping centers, public transportation, schooling.
