    Devereux Glenholme School
    Was established and opened in 1968 for children whose age range from 10-21 years old, specialized for students with severe disabilities. This school helps provide highly structured learning environments and accommodates to children with different needs. It is a private school located in Washington Connecticut. The schools goal is to help students prepare for higher education and post-secondary career opportunities.
  • The WOW center

    The WOW center
    Formerly known as Community Habilitation Center, the WOW Center was organized in the early 1970s thanks to the efforts of a small group of parents of children with developmental disabilities (autism, cerebral palsy, intellectual disabilities) the goal s to provide quality programs and support to individuals with developmental disabilities in order for them to lead meaningful and productive lives, explore their potential, develop a sense of community and pursue independence and jobs if able.
  • Pennsylvania Association for Retarded Citizens (PARC)

    Pennsylvania Association for Retarded Citizens (PARC)
    Was a case where the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania was being sued for being unjust and unlawful. The argument was that all children whether they had a disability or not benefited from a free education. The ruling stated that Pennsylvania is going to be responsible for provided free public education to all children including those with disabilities, and that the quality of information had to match the general students. After this law was passed many other states followed with similar laws.

    Section 504, Rehabilitation Act of 1973- Sept. 26, 1973
    One of the first federal laws enacted to offer the protection of students with disabilities, works together with IDEA and states that schools, jobs and communities that receive federal funding cannot discriminate or give unequaled treatment to people with disabilities. It states that people with disability cannot be denied benefits, exclude from participation or be subjected to discrimination on the sole reason of there disabilities.

  • Education for All Handicapped Children Act

    Education for All Handicapped Children Act
    Also known as Public Law (PL) 94-142 was enacted by Congress and signed by President Ford. This amendment required public schools that accepted public funding to guaranteed and enforced the rights of children with disabilities to receive a free, appropriate education. It also helped guaranteed the decisions about services needed to disabilities students to be fair and appropriate.
    In 1990 was later named Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.

    The National Lekotek Center
    Was created in Evanston, Illinois in 1980. Is a non-profit organization that help's students with disabilities to participate and deals with the “normal” world through the use of toys and technology. The concept is early intervention through toys and technology. Lekotek's also shares online a unique evaluation of toys, which help parents and professional help, simplify the toy buying experience for children with disabilities.
  • Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990

    Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990
    Was signed by president Bush on July 26 1990. This civil rights law stated that ADA disabilities include both mental and physical and does not have to be a permanentity disability. This civil right law mandated access communication, public transportation and other areas in public life. This law is similar to the discrimination law of the civil rights act of 1964 However with the ADA an employer or school could not discriminate based on sex, religion, race, ethnicity, and disability.

    The No Child Left Behind law
    Is the 2002 update of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act became a revolutionary idea: every child can learn. It states that teachers must be qualified to teach a core subject. Is to ensure that every students including those with special needs achieve important learning goals and to be tested on those subjects. This law now hold schools accountable for test score results and states that parents are to be given information and choices about their children’s education.
  • The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act

    The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act
    Originally adopted in 1975 and amended in 2004 (IDEA) is a four-part piece of legislation that ensures students with a disability are provided with free education that is tailored to their individual needs. This law includes Free Appropriate Public Education, Appropriate Evaluation, Individualized Education Plan, Least Restrictive Environment, Parent Participation, and Procedural Safeguards.

    Every student succeeds Act
    Was signed by President Obama on December 10th 2015. It is the new laws that replace the no child left behind act; it does not eliminate anything that the previous bill had. It continues on by requiring all students with disabilities to take the same standardized test and everyone else and holds them to the same standards with the excepting of a child with extremely severe disabilities
