    First Special Needs School Opened
April 1817 was a very special day in the Special education history. The very first school for the deaf opened its doors in Hartford, California. It was a private school and was much like the schools we have today. It had a sports program that included all of the main sports like, soccer, volleyball, cheerleading, and more. This school was such a huge change in the Special needs society because it actually gave a chance to those of the deaf community to learn and to attend a school.
  • Rhode Island

    Rhode Island
Rhode Island passed a law in 1840 that mandated compulsory education for the children. Not all of the states had adopted this law until 1918. With the compulsory schooling and the new mainstream belief that institutions were wrong in the twentieth century a lot of these students moved out of these institutions and went to public schools instead. 15 years later these public schools started to kick these students out of their schools, or the parents would not choose to take them to school at all.

In 1922 (CEC) or Council for exceptional Children was born. This organization was created by a few students who all had one vision: that was to help students with disabilities. Brown vs. Board
. This was called the Brown vs. Board. The US supreme count believed that it was unconstitutional that children were being taught separately because of the color on their skin. Though it did take them a few years to make sure that the schools were indeed appealing this new law by 1973 federal courts clarified that all schools owed their students equal protection of that law without any discrimination.

Before this act was put into effect the special needs students would not be permitted to participate in school at all. This act stated that students with disabilities would be put in (LRE) Least Ristrictive Evnviroment. The reson for this was to allow the max possible chance to interact with their non-disabled peers. Which was very important so that these kids felt equal to them.

The Evaluation process is probably one of the most important aspects in Special eduction. This whole topic was brought into the spotlight in 1975 with the help of the IDEA. For example, when a teacher believed that a child has a disability, the teacher had no right to proclaim that child as a special needs child. The teacher must first contact the childs parents before the testing occurs. After they have been evaluated the school can begin to create a specialized IEP for the student.
  • Least Restrictive Environment

    Least Restrictive Environment
This was a law that went into place stating that children along with the Individual Education Plan also must be in a regular classroom as possible. This means the student would not be shorted any classes any of their peers are receiving. This is so crucial and important for the child because this ensures that the child is involved in social environments and learns how to interact with other people. This is important for people to know because they often think they should be taught separate.
  • Public Law

    Public Law
An amendment passed that stated all individuals states must provide services to all of their families of children that were born with disabilities. These states had to provide them services from the time they are born. Before this amendment was created the state would have to start providing services when the child was at the age of 3.
  • Handicap act was signed

President Reagan signed the handicap children's protection act. THis was the law already explained, that grated parents the ability for services from the time the child is born.
  • EHA was reformed

    EHA was reformed
In 1990 the EHA was reformed as the individuals with disabilities Education Act. (IDEA) This IDEA was thought about by the inclusion of the special needs children into regular classes but also focused on the rights of the parents of these students to be involved in their eduction which meant they had to make the decisions that would affect their children. IDEA created the idea of the IEP and that these Plans must be approved by the parents before they are taught to the children.
