    The Council for Exceptional Children was founded. This council was created to improve the educational experiences of students with disabilities. It is formed of educators that advocate for these children to be successful.
  • The Bradley Home

    The Bradley Home
    This home was one of the first institutions that was equipped to take care of children with behavioral disorders. They used both biological and environmental treatments to surpass simple diagnosis and care.
  • Cuyahoga Council for Retarded Citizens

    Cuyahoga Council for Retarded Citizens
    This is a Council created in Ohio to help children in the region that had been excluded from Public Schools. Very soon after the first group in Ohio was created, more than 10 organizations were created across the country.

    This organization was created to serve as support for people with disabilities. It helped them learn how to live in, work in and to better their worlds. It was a support system that helped them adapt to the world.
  • Brown vs Board of Education

    Brown vs Board of Education
    This was a very important court case for all schools. It declared there was to be no more separate educational facilities and that all children were to be treated equally.

    Special Olympics

    This movement and community was created to create a world where people can compete in sports regardless of their disabilities. The founder was a very influential person that fought for the acceptance and rights for people with intellectual disabilities.
  • Title XIX

    Title XIX
    This was a part of the Social Security act of 1965. It established the Medicaid program which issues medical and health services to low-income families. The payments were made directly to the suppliers of the program that was providing the services.
  • Mills vs Board of education of the District of Columbia

    Mills vs Board of education of the District of Columbia
    This court case ruled that students with disabilities must be given a public education. If the families were unable to pay for the cost of education the child would still be allowed to receive education.     IDEA
    When this act was signed as a law it was called “The Education for All Handicapped Children Act” which is now known as IDEA. They protect the rights of children, toddlers, infants, and youth that have disabilities. They also protect their familes if necessary. https://sites.ed.gov/idea/

    This act does not allow discrimination against people with disabilities. They protect the disabled in areas such as their place of employment, transportation, and public communications.
