The American School for the Deaf is founded in Hartford Connecticut. This was the first school for disabled children in the western Hemisphere. -
1832 - Perkins institution for the blinds open
The Perkin institution was founded in Boston, Massachusetts. First, it was for mentally disabled people. It was like a boarding school; people could live and learn there.

Law Madating Compulsary Education
In 1840 Rhode Island passed a law mandating compulsory education for all children. This law says that children should receive an education and the government should provide the education. -
Columbia Institution
In February 1857, the Columbia Institution for the Instruction of the Deaf and Dumb and the Blind began operations to provide primary education and moral training to deaf, mute, and blind children. -

this act gives grants to state school send institutions that put into place programs to educate students with disabilities. -
Education for all Handicapped Children Act
this act made sure that all students with disabilities were educated in public schools. It included providing free education, special education for children 3 - 21, due process and at least restrictive environment. -
Americans with Disabilities Act
this was signed into law by President George W. Bush. the act promises people with special needs will have the same rights as everybody else. this act also stated that people with special needs cannot be discriminated against in schools, the workplace, and everyday society such as public transportation.
