    Mr. Gallaudet is an educator that formed the first permanent school for the deaf in America after returning from Europe where he went to learn how to teach the deaf. His school, The Connecticut Asylum for the Education and Instruction​ of Deaf and Dumb Persons, its doors opened on April 15, 1817.

    This hospital was first known as the Massachusetts General Hospital but was later converted and turn into the Mclean Asylum. Once it was converted, this hospital was known as the best facility to help those with mental health issues.
  • Braille is invented

    Braille is invented
    Louis Braille invented a system that has raised points that stands for each letter of the alphabet. This is used for those that are blind so they may learn to read. It takes about 30 years before his system becomes known. His system was first used at the St. Louis School of​ the Blind in 1860
  • School for Idiotic and Feeble Minded Children opens

    School for Idiotic and Feeble Minded Children opens
    The school was created by Samuel Gridley, this was the first educational institution in the nation which was a complete groundbreaking move for forward-thinking individuals. Many of the children that were a part of the school were actually orphans​ that needed a place to stay.

    Elizabeth Farrel was an American educator who became the president of the Council for Exceptional Children. In 1906 Farrell began a diagnostic clinic that would test children for any underlying causes for their poor academic achievement​.
  • Stanford Binet Scale of Intelligence is introduced

    Stanford Binet Scale of Intelligence is introduced
    This is the American adaptation of the original French Binet-Simon intelligence test which was introduced by Lewis Terman who was a psychologist from the Universtiy of Stanford. The exam is a cognitive ability and intelligence test that is used to diagnose developmental or intellectual defe=iciece by using five factors which are knowledge, quantitive reasoning, visual-spatial processing, working memory, , ​and fluid reasoning.

This is the world's largest professional organization that is expanding the scholastics achievement of children with special needs.     This is a federal civil rights law known as Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. This act is a law that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in any program that receives federal funding. This law applies to students in​ public schools.     No Child Left Behind
    The NCLB was passed by Congress in 2001, it is a federal law that provides money for extra educational assistance for poor children that will help improve their academic progress. NCLB is a new version of the 1965 Elementary and Secondary Education​ Act.
  • IDEA Reauthorized

    IDEA Reauthorized
    The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act was signed into law in 2004. Many provisions have been made throughout the years to help establish a well-balanced law for all involved. By 2011, students with disabilities were required to be included on state and district-wide assessments, this also allows regular education teachers to be included in on a students IEP team.
