    This was a non-profit organization created to improve educational outcomes for individuals with exceptionalities. These exceptionalities include disabilities, talents and gifts. This council only began with 12 members when it started in 1922.

    The Arc stands for Association for Retarded Citizens of the United States which was changed to the name Arc because they wanted to eliminate the word retarded. This organization advocates for the people with special needs and helps serve them and their families. Their mission is to improve the quality of life for persons with intellectual and development disabilities.
  • Brown V. Board of Education

    Brown V. Board of Education
    This was a successful Supreme Court ruling that ruled that segregation in schools was unconstitutional. This ruling was considered a milestone for the American Civil Rights movement. It brought forth the attention of the unfair racial inequalities that African Americans were dealt with.

    Department of Public Welfare V. Haas
    The Supreme court of Illinois stated that laws did not require giving the mentally deficient a free education because of the lack of their intelligence.

    This act was a commitment to equal access to quality education. This is an extensive statue that funds primary and secondary schools with an emphasis on high standards and accountability. It was signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson.

    Education for all handicapped children act
    This act requires all public schools to provide the appropriate educational services to all children ages 3-21. It was introduced to President Gerald Ford who then signed it into law. Prior to this act many special needs students struggled in classrooms without the appropriate tools needed to succeed.

    This organization provide information to educators, parents and individuals with learning disabilities. They advocate for policies to protect the rights and opportunities in educations for these individuals with learning disabilities. They also conduct research and different programs to help foster effective learning tools for these individuals in need.

    This federal law supports children and youth's special education and related programming services. It ensures that all children with a disability are given a free appropriate public education. The education should meet their individual needs and help prepare them for further education and employment in the future.

    Americans with Disabilities Act
    This act was signed into law by President George H.W. Bush. This act guarantees that all people with disabilities have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else. It is referred to as an equal opportunity law for people with disabilities.
  • No Child Left Behind Act

    No Child Left Behind Act
    Th focus of this act is to close the student achievement gaps. This is done by providing all children with a fair and equal opportunity to obtain an education. This act was signed in 2002 by President George W. Bush.
