Formal Deaf Education Began in the United States
The first permanent school for the deaf in America was established in Connecticut. This officially marked the first real efforts to educate people with disabilities. -

A landmark court case that overturned Plessy v Ferguson saying that "separate is not equal". This case encouraged the formation of many advocacy groups to inform the public about the need for special education programs. -
In the Mills v Board of Education of the District of Columbia
This ruling made it unlawful for the D.C. Board of Education to deny individuals with mental and learning disabilities access to publicly founded education. -
Education for All Handicapped Children Act
This act assured that all students with disabilities are educated in public schools. It provided free education, special education for children ages 3-21, supplemental services, due process, zero reject, and least restrictive environment. -
Least Restrictive Environment
Along with a student's IEP, they must also be included in as many regular education classes as possible. This ensured that children could have social experiences. -
Handicapped Children's Protection Act
Ronald Reagan signs the Handicapped Children's Protection Act which was a law that gave parents of children with disabilities more say in the development of their child's IEP. -

No Child Left Behind Act
This was signed into law by President George W. Bush. This law states that all students should be proficient in math and reading by 2014.
