Brown vs. Board of Education : May 17, 1954
This event was one of the landmark events in the 50’s that really started the special needs movement. Even though it had to do with not segregating kids in public schools and not specials needs, it was a start to fairness within the school’s systems. Accommodations for those people who needed them were now seen more normal. -
Elementary and Secondary Education Act : January 1st, 1965
The ESEA was a statute which was made by Lyndon B. Johnson during a time where poverty and education were not aligned. The act is reauthorized every 5 years since the day it was signed. This act provided special funding for both; primary and secondary education. As the years go on, additions/provisions are made and added to the act. -
Rehabilitation Act Amendments Section 504 : September 26, 1973
This act, better called the Rehab Act, seriously prohibits any kind of discrimination in groups that are made specifically for disabled people. This helps with any type of discrimination between an employer and/or the disabled employee. This Act bettered the understanding of the procedures which are needed to be followed by companies when hiring these individuals -
Education for All Handicapped Children Act : January 1st, 1975
Congress of the US enacted this act to make sure that any public school which at any point was receiving federal aid to run it must provide equality for children who were mentally or physically disabled. They also made sure that each one of those public schools could offer one free meal a day as well. This act also brought the parents of those childrens closer together by working closely on creating the best educational plan available for their child -
EAHCA Amendments : January 1st, 1986
These amendments were made to the original EAHCA Act to entail infants and toddlers into it’s protection. They also brought clarity to the rights of parents who had kids with disabilities. This Act would later be renamed the IDEA act. -
Americans with Disabilities Act : January 1st, 1990
This was one of the biggest stepping stones for equality within the disabled community because its extended their rights basically into every aspect of life. Not only was employment being safeguarded by the government for these people but so was transportations and accommodations in public. -
IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Act) : January 1st, 1997
This act basically was a more broad ADA. It’s main purpose was to make sure students with disabilities conducted the same tests/assessments on all school levels. The government wanted to ensure that education was equal to all no matter the case. -
No Child Left Behind Act : July 9, 2001
The No Child Left Behind Act was signed by President Bush. The main focus of this Act was to ensure that the educational gap that existed between individuals who lived in poverty and those who were advantaged didn’t exist. -
Every Student Succeeds Act : December 10, 2015
The main reason for this act was to replace the existing NCLB (No Child Left Behind Act). Obama re assured those with special needs that the educational gap between them and those that are not disabled would be diminished.
