  • July 28th, 1876- First Professional Association

    In 1876, Edouard Seguin an American psychiatrist helps to organize the first professional association concerned with disabilities (mental retardation), predecessor to today’ American Association on Mental Retardation
  • July 28th, 1897- National Education Association establishes a section

    The National Education Association establishes a section for teachers of children with disabilities. The purpose of the National Education Association is to advise for professional educators.
  • July 28th, 1904- Training Programs

    The Vineland Training School in New Jersey inaugurates training programs for teachers of students with mental retardation. The Vineyard Training School assignment is to instruct people with developmental disorders.
  • July 28, 1922- Council for Exceptional Children (CEC)

    An organization that later would become the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) is founded in New York City. CEC is the largest international organization to dedicate to enhance the academic adventure for students.
  • July 28th, 1949- United Cerebral Palsy (UCP)

    The United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) association is founded. Cerebral Palsy also called CP is a disorder that affects motions, muscle tone or an individuals body stance.
  • July 28th, 1973- Public Law 93-112

    Public Law 93-112, the Vocational Rehabilitation Act of 1973, is enacted; Section 504 prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities. This law pertains to students
    within a public and publicity school setting.
  • July 28th, 1997- Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (PL 105-117)

    The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (PL 105-117) is re-authorized, providing a major retooling and expansion of services for students with disabilities and their families that is beneficial for them.
  • Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004 (PL 108-446)

    Individuals with Disabilities Improvement Act of 2004 is passed; aligns IDEA legislation with provisions of the No Child Left Behind Act; modifies the individualized education program (IEP) process in addition to changes affecting school discipline due to process, and evaluation of students with disabilities.
  • November 2015- 40th Anniversary of Landmark

    In November of 2015, we celebrated the 40th anniversary of landmark legislation that removed barriers for children with learning disabilities to attend public schools as those who didn’t require unique educational accommodations.
  • COVID-19 2020 Special Education Learning

    Some teachers are making home visits to educate parents and also giving students the opportunity to learn virtually through zoom meetings or educational videos made by the teacher or other sources and uploaded for them to view.
