School Opening
The Connecticut Asylum for the Education and Instruction of Deaf and Dumb, or now known as American School for the Deaf, was the first special education school opened in the United States. This school was a model for education for the deaf and inspired many other schools to open for special education. -
Council for Exceptional Children
The Council for Exceptional Children was originally formed with only 12 members. This organization was founded to help students' educational experiences who have disabilities. The CEC provides standards that every teacher should follow to ensure that students with exceptionalities are receiving the best education possible. -
Elementary and Secondary Education Act
This program was created by the United States Department of Education which provided funding for primary education. Essentially, the government provides "quality and equality" in education. This allows for grants for special education centers as well as textbooks and books for classes. This act eventually led to the creation of the "No Child Left Behind" act which is still being used today.

Education For All Handicapped Children Act
This act mandated that all schools accept federal funding for students with disabilities. Public schools must evaluate all children with disabilities and create an Individualized Education Plan. This education plan will include the parents, teachers, and any other professionals. Parents can also dispute decisions made about their children's education. -
U.S. Department of Education Office of Special Education Programs
OSEP is the office that contains information about IDEA, and creates grants for children with disabilities. They help provide leadership and financial support for states and local districts. -
Americans with Disabilites Act
This law prohibits discrimination against those who have disabilities. Whether it is in school, work, or the general public, they are protected by this law. This mandates that there are accommodations for those who have disabilities in transportation, such as school buses. -
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act
This act supports special education and services for students with disabilities. This act is was originally known as the Education of Handicapped Children Act. IDEA ensures that all children with disabilities are provided free public education that is equal. All students with disabilities will have an Individualized Education Plan created specifically for them with their parents. -
No Child Left Behind Act
This act requires that all students should get tested equally, and schools will receive federal funding for standardized tests. Students with disabilities are also required to test. With this equality act, students may included in inclusion classrooms. Under the NCLBA, students with learning disabilities will have access to accommodations if needed during testing.

Assistive Technology Act
This act provides awareness for assistive technology and services that can be used in classrooms. This act provides these assistive technologies to children with disabilities so that can fully emerge themselves in their education. These AT's can be used in any classroom, and these students may be mainstreamed into a class with these accommodations. Students will have AT's to assist them with their studies. -
National Dissemination Center for Children with Disabilities
This is a national information and referral center that provides information on disability-related issues for families and teachers. With its collected information about the NCLBA, parents were able to grab information they needed in one spot. This organization has been moved to the Center for Parent Information and Resources.
