History of Special Education

  • Columbia Institution

    The Columbia Institution is the first college that was established for students who had a disability. The college opened it's doors in September of 1864.
  • Council for Exceptional Children

    The first advocacy group for children who have disabilities. This advocacy group is one of the largest for special education. The CEC makes sure that all children that has special needs receives education that is free and appropriate for their needs.
  • Brown v. Board of Education

    This was a court case that emphasizes the black to white students in school and students who have disabilities verses general education students and how they were not treated the same. This encouraged information to be brought forth to show the need for special education programs.
  • Elementary and Secondary Education Act

    The ESEA gave grants to schools so that they could have programs in place to educate special needs students. This is not a law telling schools to educate students with special needs.
  • Section 504

    This is the first law that protects students with special needs and disabilities from discrimination. These students can have equal opportuntiy to participate in programs.
  • Least Restrictive Enviornment

    When a student has an IEP, they can be in a general education classroom when possible. This provides the student to have social experiences with their peers.
  • Americans with Disabilities Act

    President George W. Bush signed this act into law. This is a promise to those with disabilities, that they will have the same rights as everyone else. Again, it states that there is no discrimination against people with disabilities at school, in a work place, or in everyday life.
  • IDEA

    IDEA provides children who have a disability the opportunity to be able to go to school and have the same education as those students who do not have disabilities. Free appropriate public education that is tailored to the students needs is provided to those with disabilities.
  • No Child Left Behind Act

    President George W. Bush created new standards and goals for all public schools to use to make sure that all students are learning. Any schools that fail to meet the standards are under tough corrective measures.
  • IDEA Reauthorized

    Many changes were made by President George W. Bush to the orginal IDEA. Included in the changes are IEP, the due process, and discipline of students.
