  • First Special Education School Opened

    First Special Education School Opened
    The Perkins School for the Blind was founded in 1829 and was the first school in the United States for special education students. This school is located in Watertown, Massachusetts. Anyone who is blind, visually impaired or deafblind from the ages of 3 through 22 can attend this school.
  • Stagnation and Regression

    The Civil Wars and Great depression got in the way of children with disabilities being able to get the education they deserved. During this time, students with disabilities were separated from students who did not have disabilities so that the teacher can focus on the students who needed more help.
  • Inception of Special Olympics

    Inception of Special Olympics
    The Special Olympics is an organization that was created for people with disabilities to come together and play sports and do different activities. Their main goal was to put a spotlight on the ability that these children with disabilities have. These people are also offered health screenings during this time.
  • Rehabilitation Act

    In 1973 the Rehabilitation Act came into play. The main reason for this is to forbid organizations and employers from denying people with disabilities. These people with disabilities should receive the same benefits and services as others.

  • Education for All Handicapped Children Act

    Education for All Handicapped Children Act of 1975 was created by the United States Congress. This requires all public schools to accept funds from the government to provide equal education and one free meal a day to children with disabilities.
  • Individuals with Disabilities Education Act

    Individuals with Disabilities Education Act
    On November 29, 1975 President Ford signed a law stating that all children with disabilities will be given free public education. This law is also known as IDEA. IDEA is granted to any child from age 3 through 21.
  • Florida Diagnostic and Learning Resources System

    Florida Diagnostic and Learning Resources System
    The Florida Diagnostic and Learning Resources System four functions are: Child Finds, Parents and Family Services, Human Resources Development, and Technology. Their main goal is to help find services for children with disabilities and for their families so everyone can live a comfortable life. These services are availible to anyone who has a disability or works closely with someone with a disability.

    National Center of Learning Disabilities
    The main goal of the National Center of Learning Disabilities is to insure that all people with disabilities have the ability to attend school and find a job. This organization provides information to whoever helps the person with disabilities to then be able to use that information to get the person help and find them a job.

    No Child Left Behind Act
    The No Child Left Behind Act was established by President George Bush in 2001. This Act provides money for children who can not afford to go to school on their own. This law also held schools accountable for what was being taught to the students.

  • Assistive Technology Act

    Assistive Technology Act
    The main goal of the Assistive Technology Act is to allow people with disabilities to use technology. This could be any piece of technology that would allow the person with disabilities to learn easier. It can be an equipment, device or a system that makes it easier to function.
