Binet and Simon develop a series of tests to identify students with giftedness. The tests only measurie mental age in a single outcome through a series of tests. -
Longest Running Longitudinal study of gifted children begins
Lewis Terman begins the longest longiitudinal study of gifted students with a sample study of 1500 gifted students. -
National Association of Gifted Children is founded
Ann Isaacs is the leader of the newly founded "National Association of gifted students." -
Sputnik Launched
Soviet Union launches "Sputnik" forcing the United States to reexamine the quality of American schooling in Math and Science, but also used funds to identify talented and gifted students in these subject areas. -
Marland Report-
First definition of gifted education is issued to schools encouraging them to broadly define gifted education including: intellectual and academic talents, leadership abilities, visual and performing arts, and creative and productive thinking. Also was the first National Report on gifted education. -
Congress passess Jacob Javits Gifted and Talented Students Education Act
Jacob Javits Gifted and Talented Students Education Act was launched as part of the reauthorization of Elementary and Secondary School Act. The JJGTSEA provides grant money for gifted education research as well as grant money to fo directly to schools to fund gifted and talented education programs. -

Javits program included in NCLB and expanded to offer statewide grants. Definition of giftedness is also broadened once again including: intellectual, high achievement, creative, artistic, and leadership abilities. -
NAGC publishes national gifted education standards for teacher preparedness
NAGC publishes gifted education standards and standards to all teachers to help them be prepared to teach gifted students. Revised later in 2013.
