  • Brown v. Board

    U.S Supreme Court Decided in the Brown V. Board of Education of Topeka case making it unconstitutional for educational institutions to segregate children by race. This legal ruling had far-reaching implication for special education as well.
  • Presidents Panels

    In 1961, President John F. Kennedy created the President's Panel on Mental Disability. The purpose of the panel was to include federal aid to states.
  • Elementary and Secondary Education Act

    Lyndon B. johnson signed the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. This act provides funding for primary education which expanded access to public education for children with disabilities.
  • Children with Disabilities in Public School

    Children with Disabilities in Public School
    By the 1970's there was only a small amount of children with disabilities who had attended and began becoming educated in public schools.
  • Federal Laws Enacted

    The Education for All Handicapped Children Act (EHA) and Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) are the two laws that were enacted. EHA gives the right to public education for all children regardless of disability. IDEA requires schools to provide individualized or special education for children with disabilities.
  • Handicapped Act Amendments

    The Education of the Handicapped Act Amendments of 1986 was enacted. This act makes it mandatory for pre-school special education. In addition, provides early intervention services to infants and toddlers.
  • Americans with Disabilities Act

    Americans with Disabilities Act
    This law prohibits any type of discrimination on the basis of disability.
  • Congress Amended IDEA

    Congress amended IDEA calling for early intervention for students. This raised the standards for instructors who teach special education classes
  • No Child Left Behind

    All students should be proficient in math and reading by 2014 including students with disabilities. Video:

    IDEA Reauthorized, enacts all students with disabilities are now required to be included on state and district-wide assessments.
