Charles Grimes, surveyor general of New south wales, was the first European to explore the Yarra river. -

Land was sub-divided and the first public land sales were held shortly after. -

John Dight Purchased Melbourne block 88, which included 26 acres of land along the Yarra river. -

The first steam powered flour mil was constructed in Melbourne, Dight built his water powered mil soon after, from bricks bought over from Tasmania. -

The flour mill was bought by Edwin Trennery. Trennery subsequently subdivided the land. -
History of the weir
The weir at Dights falls dates back to 1895 when the structure was built to provide water to the Melbourne flour milling company -
repairing the weir.
The weir has been repaired a number of times in it's 100 year history and the structure has many new materials added though out time. -

the original timber piles were capped concert, replacing the timber decking. -

Melbourne water, recognised that the weir stoped fish from getting through so they created a rock fishway for the fish to get though.
