History of Computer Storage

  • Manchester Mark 1 Williams-Kilburn Tube

    Manchester Mark 1 Williams-Kilburn Tube
The Williams Tube was developed in 1947 at the University of Manchester. The Williams tube could store anywhere between 1024 bits to 2560 bits of data and was a random access memory. This piece of technology stored bits as dots on a screens surface and the info was read by a metal plate that reads electrical charges.
  • Whirlwind Core Memory

    Whirlwind Core Memory
The Whirlwind Core Memory was the first magnetic core technology. It was made with magnetic material that was strung on wires. Every core stored one bit. Every Whirlwind Core Memory had multiple smaller cores.
  • IBM 2321 Data Cell Drive

    IBM 2321 Data Cell Drive
The Data Cell Drive stored up to 400 mb. It used magnetic strips wrapped around a rotating metal cylinder to read and write. It was released in 1964.
  • IBM Floppy Disc Drive

    IBM Floppy Disc Drive
The IBM Floppy Disc Drive was Invented in 1971. It was a ROM and could store 80 kilobytes.
  • Laser Disc

    Laser Disc
The laser Disc was invented in 1978 and was very popular for it's superior video and audio quality. However, laser disc players were very expensive.
  • CD ROM

    CD ROM
CD ROM stands for compact disc read only memory. It could hold 550 megabytes of data. The CD ROM was originally developed for storing music. This CD had more storage space then previous compact discs.
  • Solid State Disc

    Solid State Disc
Solid State Disc (or SSD for short) were developed to be stronger and smaller than other hard drives. It was made in 1992 and made good lightweight storage for computers.
  • DVD

    DVD
Digital Video Discs had huge amounts of storage compared to CDs.The DVDs had good video and sound quality, therefore making them popular choices to store movies on.
  • USB Flash Drive

    USB Flash Drive
USB Flash drives were invented in 2000. They were able to store much more data than CDs. They were also very portable and made transferring data much easier.
  • Cloud Based Network

    Cloud Based Network
Cloud based Network was invented in 2009 and was developed for easier backing up of data. Many businesses and general consumers make use of cloud based networking to this day.
