Hawthorne was the first American author to write literature for children with books such as, A Wonder Book for Boys and Girls. -
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
Lewis Carroll wrote his stories to inspire children's imagination and provide pleasure to reading. -
More Children begin to Read & Write
By this point child labor laws were in full effect which freed them up to go to school and learn to read and write. Thanks to this more children's books were being written and published and public library's began to reach out to more children. -
Macmillian Publishing
By this year the Macmillian publishing house -which was based in the United States, had began devoting it's resources and time to publishing children's books. -
Newbery Award is Established
The John Newbery Award was created by the American Library Association and those two years; 1922-1923 two women, Helen Dean Fish and May Massee became the first children's editors. -
Childrens Books Boom
May Massee opened up a children's book department which sparked other companies to open children's book departments causing the rise in their popularity. Throughout the twentieth century children and young adult books became more popular in homes, schools, and libraries. -
Caldecott Award Established
This year the Randolph Award for literature was also created. -
Diversity reaches literature
Throughout the 60's and 70's children and young adult literature began to reflect diversity with books such as S.E. Hinton's The Outsiders. -
Literature Evolution
From the 90's through the 2000's and present day children and young adult literature continues to evolve. Different genres grow and the development of technology seek to reach even more readers.
