    The Baltimore Water Co. was purchased in August 1854 for $1,350,000 with the water dept. taking over its management within the following year. The system was made up of two mill ponds approximately 10 mil. Gal., two reservoirs totaling to 25 mil. Gal., a pumping station and approx. 50 miles of small water mains when first sold but had to grow when it was found to be not enough to sustain the city.

    The Great Baltimore Fire started February 7 around 11am. It destroyed 80 blocks of the city and 2,500 buildings were affected. This fire caused the city to rethink many aspects of the city. The rebuilding of the city moved into the 20th Century. One of the city's improvements were the creation of Baltimore's first sewer system. The fire was taken out on February 8th 1904 at about 3pm.
