  • Harvard University uses first written exams

    Not sure of the exact date, only the year.

  • Harvard uses first entrance exams

  • College Entrance Examination Board set up

    Board began using multiple choice tests that were less dependant on where the examinees had attended school.

    This test was created to combat the rise in student population in the USA. High school attendance increased by over 700% between 1890-1918. (Black,18).

  • Stanford-Binet IQ test was created

    This test is the model for IQ tests.

    Huge influx of immigration in the USA. Standardization of education necessary in order ot create and maintain a common national identity.

    A need arose for standadization of assessment materials in the United States as more and more people were immigrating.

  • Stanford Achievement Test was created.

    Commonly referred to as the SAT--college entrance examination

  • Essay exams seemed to disappear and SAT was sole test for college admission

    The multiple choice format became the preferred format of the SAT, which, in part with short achievlement tests, became the sole and preferred format of SAT testing, being able to be completed in one day.

    These tests were first introduced in Boston as a result of from rural to urban communities and growth of an industrial economy creating new demands one education.
