    On his third voyage to the Pacific, Captain Cook discovered the Hawaiian archipelago and named it the Sandwich Islands. The Hawaiians considered Cook and his men gods, particularly because they were in the middle of their festival for Lono.     Linfield College originally started as the Baptist College of McMinnville, and was later named McMinnville College. It offered its first degree in 1884. It was named Linfield College after Frances Ross Linfield, who helped the college secure its financial standing. Today, Linfield hosts 1800 undergraduates on it's McMinnville campus and 400 on its Portland Nursing Campus. It also has a Division of Continuing Education for those who prefer online courses.

    After William McKinley was assassinated in 1901, Theodore Roosevelt became the youngest President to take office at the age of 42. Serving as the President until 1909, he is known for the completion of the Panama Canal and the negotiated end to the Russo-Japanese War, which won him a Nobel Peace Prize. Roosevelt negelcted re-election in 1908, but became the first third-party candidate in the Presidential election in 1912 for the "Bull Moose" Party.

    An attack from the Colorado National Guard against a colony of 1200 coal strikers killed almost 25. At that time, the Rockefeller family owned three of colorado's largest companies. Whether or not it was a scheme by John D.     The bombing of Pearl Harbor
    On this day, Honolulu's Pearl Harbor Naval Base was attacked by Japanese fighters, killing more than 2,000 military personnel and civilians. This was an attempt to prevent America in aiding territories in Southeast Asia while the Empire of Japan planned out military actions. The next day, the United States declared war on Japan. President Franklin D. Roosevelt was remembered for his speech, when he declared December 7, 1941, "a date which will live in infamy."

    Jackie Robinson became the first African-American player to suit up for a Major League Baseball game in America, breaking a 50-year segregation era. Robinson was called up to the Brooklyn Dodgers after a year with the Dodger's farm club, the Montreal Royals, and in ten seasons played in six World Series after winning the Rookie of the Year award in 1947.

    Roger Maris broke Babe Ruth's single-season homerun record by hitting a 2-0 pitch into the right field stands during the Yankees' last regular season game. This season is well-known for Maris and teammate, Mickey Mantle, who were both racing for Ruth's record while playing for the New York Yankees. This record stood until 1998, when it was broken by Mark McGwire.
