History of Special Education

  • American School for the Deaf

    This was the first school run specifically for disabled children anywhere in the Western Hemisphere at the time.
  • Brown v. The Board of Education

    The ruling of this case determined that all Americans should granted with an opportunity to acquire an education.
  • Elementary and Secondary Education Act

    By passing this act, public schools in America would receive federal funding with the goal of reducing the achievement gap among students in the country. This included funding for special education programs.
  • Special Olympics

    Originally a camp called Camp Shriver, the Special Olympics provides an opportunity for athletes with special needs to participate in a global sports competition.
  • PARC v. Penn

    The ruling of this case allowed students in the state of Pennsylvania with disabilities to be places in public schools with an education tailored to their needs.
  • The Rehabilitation Act

    This act ensured that people with disabilities would not be denied benefits from programs receiving federal funding.
  • Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act

    This section specifies that children with a 504 will be given proper accommodations according to their needs.
  • Least Restrictive Environment

    In regards to a student's IEP, they should plan to have the student be in as many regular education classes as possible.
  • IDEA Act

    The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act allowed for students with special needs to receive free public education tailored to their needs.
  • Education for All Handicapped Children Act

    This act ensured that students with special needs would receive equal access to public education and one free meal a day at public schools receiving federal funds.
  • Board of Education of Hendrick Hudson Central School District v. Rowley

    The ruling of this case determined that students with special needs will receive individualized instruction that fits their needs
  • Willowbrook State School Closure

    Beginning its operation in 1947, Willowbrook School was shit down in 1987 following many claims of abuse, neglect, and and medical mistreatment during its operation.
  • Americans with Disabilities Act

    This act prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability.
  • IDEA Act Amendment

    The IEP process is improved
  • No Child Left Behind Act/Every Student Succeeds Act

    This act raised the expectations of teachers and schools, including teachers/schools involved with special education programs. However, this act was repealed and replaced with the Every Student Succeeds Act in 2015.
  • My Sister's Speech Impediment

    My sister took speech classes from age 2-12 due to a speech impediment caused by a physical abnormality in her soft palette. She is currently a sophomore in high school.
  • Blind Band Students

    When I was in high school, a few blind students joined my band program. They had to receive special music (either braille music or enlarged music), and I was able to play alongside one of them in marching band where we both played in the front ensemble. The only assistance he needed from time to time was a shoulder to hold onto and as a guide while walking.
  • Private Student

    I am currently teaching a private piano student with a disability. He takes joint lessons with his brother, but in the 3 years that I've had them, I've had the opportunity to adapt my teaching for my student in order to have them both progress at about the same level. Just last week I discovered that pointing to each note as my student plays helps immensely with remembering note names and rhythms.
  • Current Placement

    At my current placement, I have spoken with my mentor teacher about the different 504 and IEPs of my students. I am still in the process of reviewing all of them for this semester.
