    Demonology, Gods, and Magic.They believed that they were possessed by good or evil spirits and the primary treatment for this was exorcism. Trepanation was also used to release the spirits by a hole in the skull.

    Middle Ages (The Middle East)

    Witchcraft, exorcism, and mixed beliefs and treatments.The first mental hospital was established in Baghdad in 792 AD.
  • 1300 BCE

    Middle Ages (Europe)

    Avoided scientific thinking. Mainly used Exorcism.

  • Humanitarian Approaches

    This was the time of the Asylums. Mental Hospital care was available by the 20th century.

  • Deinstitutionalization

    This was when patients were discharged from an Asylum and cared for as an outpatient.

  • Integrative

    This is the way mental patients are cared for today.
