History of 1G, 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G.

    Originally rolled out in Japan in 1979 with speeds of 2.4 kbps. The company first to use it was Nippon Telegraph and Telephone.
  • 1G in the U.S.

    In 1983 1G was introduced to the U.S. and became available.
  • First commercial cellphone released

    The DynaTAC was released in 1983 by Motorola
  • Japan fully covered with 1G

    In 1984 Japan become the first country to be fully covered in 1G cell service.
  • 2G

    2G was originally released in Finland in 1991. It had speeds of 40kbit/s and was used first by Radiolinja.
  • 3G

    3G became available in Japan in 2001. It had speeds of 2Mbps and was originally used by Verizon.
  • 4G

    In 2009 4G LTE (Long Term Evolution) was released in Stockholm, Sweden and Oslo, Norway. With 4G LTE phones had to be specifically designed to work with it. 4G LTE right now is the standard for cellphones. Telia Sonera was the first company to use it.
  • 5G

    5G becomes available to the public in very specific places in 2019. It isn't available for most cellphones but it is slowly becoming more prominent. Verizon is the first company to use it.
  • 1G (mostly) not available

    1G is not available in any country except Russia as of February 8,2021.
  • 2G not available in the U.S.

    In 2022 2G will no longer supported in the U.S.
  • 3G unavailable in the U.S.

    In February 2022 3G will no longer be available in the U.S.
