Christopher Columbus
Christopher Columbus was an Italian sailor and navigator who thought he knew a faster way to reach Asia by sailing west through the Atlantic. Columbus asked the king of Portugal to finance his voyage but the king refused. Columbus later tried again and the king accepted so he went off to sail across the globe. Columbus changed history because he discovered parts of the world that no one knew about. -
Green Mountain boys
The Green Mountain boys were a group of backwoods fighters led by Ethan Allen. This group captured the British fort taking their large supply of artillery, or cannons plus their large guns. -
The Declaration of Independence
The Declaration of Independence was an important event because a committee including Benjamin Franklin, John Adams Roger Sherman, Robert Livingston, and Thomas Jefferson came together to fight for their independence from Great Britain. The group chose Jefferson as the leader because he was a great writer that came from Virginia. The group also knew that Virginia was a major key to win their independence. Later despite some opposition the colonies won and where considered independent. -
The Louisiana Purchase
President Thomas Jefferson decided he wanted to purchase more land. So he bought the Louisiana territory from France. This cost him 15 million dollars. The main effects of the Louisiana Purchase were that now the United States doubled in size and now they had complete control over the Mississippi River. -
The Louis and Clark journey West
Lewis and Clark were explorers. They were hired to explore the Louisiana territory.Their journey was not the easiest. They had the help of the Native Americans. Lewis and Clark discovered two major impacts. One was new maps and the other was that over 200 new species of plants and animals were discovered. -
The California Gold Rush
A carpenter was working on a sawmill near a river when he saw a shiny stone. This was gold. Once everyone heard about this thousands of people came flooding into California. This was known as the California Gold Rush. -
The attack on Fort Sumter
Fort Sumter was attacked by the Confederate troops. After 34 hours of being at war Fort Sumter surrendered. This was later known as the Civil War. -
Civil Rights Act
The Civil Rights Act of 1866 stated that all people born in the United States except Native Americans were citizens. It also stated that all citizens were entitled with equal rights no matter what their race, color, gender and religion was. -
World War I
During the period of World War I it was called the Great War because no one going through it could imagine anything worse at the moment. After World War ended some countries still had hatred between each other which was a major part of why World War II began. -
World War II
World War II was a six year war that involved most of the world. Years later you can still see the scars that it left on buildings. In this war there was really no enemy or main reason of fighting. World War II was important because it later became one of the reasons for the Cold War. -
Brown v. Board of Education
In the early 1950s five school segregation issues were filed at the supreme from Deleware, Kansas, South Carolina, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. This came together as Brown v. The Board of Education. The "Brown" part came from a little black girl named Linda Brown who had to walk farther to get to a different school even though she lived near a school for whites. Later it was ruled by the supreme court that it segregation was illegal in school and public buildings. -
A day everyone would remember
This was the day four commercial airplanes were purposely crashed into the World Trade Center in New York. Another plane was crashed into the Pentagon by Islamic terrorist group called "the Base". A lot of innocent people lost their lives that day. But America came together to help save people and take them across the island to safety. -
