This period is defined by the US Civil War that threatened to divide the US due to cultural and economic differences and slavery between the North and South. A turning point in the conflict was President Abraham Lincoln giving the Emancipation Proclamation stating that every slave in the US deserves the right to be free. -

The period defined by the aftermath the civil war mostly focused on the south. The 13th, 14th, and 15th amendment were added to bill of rights freeing all slaves and giving them the right to vote. In reaction to this the Ku Klux Klan and Jim Crow laws were founded to impend African Americans right to vote. -

Westward Expansion
The expansion of the rail system across the US allowed for the mining, ranching and cattle, and agricultural industry to boom. However the expansion cut into Native American land leading to conflict. -

The late industrial revolution and laissez faire policies allowed for the rise of monopolies like Andrew Carnegie's steel monopoly. Great amounts of immigration mostly from Eastern Europe and Italy lead to urbanization of many more cities and cheap labor for the monopolies to feed on. -

Period in time when US foreign policy changed to be aggressive in foreign affairs regardless if they were involved justified by Theodore Roosevelt's "Big Stick" idea. During this time the US annexed hawaii and philipines among others, got involved into what is now called the Spanish American War which was fought on multiple countries land, and messed with several Latin american countries politics. -

Era highlighted by movements to regulate monopolies, protect consumers, and women's suffrage. Prohibition and environmental conservation were also hot topics at the time. -

World War I
War fought over intricate political alliances in Europe. The US entered the war with the sinking of the Lusitania, a civilian cruise ship. WWI was characterized by trench warfare used by both sides. With the end of the war Woodrow Wilson proposed his 14 points to give a balanced peaceful solution to the conflict, however, the majority of the point were rejected with one of the only point accepted was the creation of the League of Nations. -

Roaring Twenties
Age characterized by the younger generation rejecting traditions of the older because of the travesties of recent wars with flappers and Jazz. Other events that happened were the rise of the "new" KKK and Scopes trial where religion was allowed to be taught in schools with the overruling of evolution in schools. -

Stock market crash lead to high unemployment rates and decimation of US economy. President hoover at the time was blamed for it despite using his best efforts to avoid and later deal with the aftermath. Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal however helped solve the economic crisis and put counter measures in place to avoid it happening again. -

World War II
The Us got involed with WWII when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. At the end of the war it was discovered that Adolf Hitler had been taking those deemed impure of insurgents to concentration camps; the survivors called it the Holocaust. To end the war on the Japanese side the US dropped the Atomic Bomb murdering thousands and irradiating the cities. -

After WWII communism rose to power as an alternative form of government, lead by the USSR. The US felt threatened by this rise and started and issue of containment to prevent the spread. These rivaling powers launched into an arms race, space race and espionage to out compete the other. -

Civil Rights Movement
Movement for African Americans to exercise the rights given to them by 13-15th amendments lead by Martin Luther King. Movement focus on peaceful protests where they would sit in designated white areas and not leave till served or dragged out started by Rosa Parks doing so on a bus. Notable events were MLK's "I Have A Dream" and Brown v. Board of Education ruling Plessy v. Ferguson was unconstitutional. -

One of the wars of the Cold war, the US supported South Vietnam against Communist North Vietnam. The US was forced to issue a draft due to the high causality rates leading to a strong antiwar movement. -

Toward the end of the century the USSR collapsed ending the cold war. The internet was invented thus began the technological revolution. despite the new development other perils like inflation, oil crisis's, and a conservative resurgence lay on the horizon. -

The tech revolution lead to closer contact with the word called globalization. However the 9/11 terror attacks occurred spurring a hysterical War on Terror to the Middle East. The governments extreme spending lead to the 2008 economic recession.
