The great California Gold Rush in 1848 brought in people from around the world. Immigration levels increased immensely and one of the greatest races to travel to California was the Chinese.

The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
This Treaty ended the Mexican-American War. The terms determined that Mexico would cede 55 percent of of it's territory to America. This land included parts present-day of Arizona, California, New Mexico, Texas, Colorado, Nevada, and Utah.

The Great Compromise
The Compromise consists of five laws that dealt with the issue of slavery. The compromise helped to alleviate some the problems uprising between Northern and Southern states.

Dred Scott vs. Sandford
There was a Supreme Court trial between Dred Scott and John Sandford. Dred Scott made the decision, as Supreme Court Justice, that Blacks were not U.S. citizens. Brought up sectional tensions between North and South states, being that this decision validated many of the Southern states persistence on slavery.

The Homestead Act
Signed by President Abraham Lincoln, this act encouraged the Western migration by providing settlers 160 acres for a small fee and required that they stay on the land for a complete 5 years, before receiving ownership of the land.

The 15th Amendment is Passed
Added to the Constitution, the 15th Amendment allowed African American men the right to vote stating that the "right of citizens of the United States of America to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude."

The Chinese Exclusion Act
This act was a United States federal law signed by President Arthur excluded all Chinese immigrants from migrating to the United States for 10 years. The Chinese Exclusion Act was the first immigration law to prevent a specific ethnic group from traveling to the United States.

The Immigration Act of 1882
Two components were involved in this act. The first being that a "head tax" was implemented for any alien that were entering the country. This tax was for any person traveling from a foreign land to the United States, and was 50 cents. The government agents were given the responsibility of inspecting ports.

The Dillingham Commission
Also known as The United States Immigration Commission. Identifies the Mexican laborers are the best solution for the Southwest labor shortage. All Mexican laborers are exempted of paying head taxes from 1903 to 1907.

The Emergency Quota Act
Also known as The Emergency Immigration Act of 1921, the Immigration Restriction Act of 1921, the Per Centrum Law, and the Johnson Quota Act. Restricted immigration into the United States. Added two new features to the immigration laws: numerical limits on immigration and use of a quota system to establish those limits.
