Lincoln: Emancipation Proclamation put into effect
Contrary to popular belief the Emancipation Proclamation only freed slaves in the ten Confederate states, while slaves in Union states were still to be held as property. Regardless of the Proclamation many "freed" Confederate slaves that were encountered by Union troops were still considered property when taken into account and afforded little of the rights they believed they were entitled to. Also halts European interferance/assistance with Confederate states. -
