    The treaty leased ten miles of land within Panama to the US in order to build the canal. Changes Naval and economic orientation by allowing for faster transport.

    While William Howard Taft was president, the US foreign policy was changed greatly from the idea that Americans should invest money in foreign countries rather than the self-focused ideology of monopolies before this time period.

    In this so called "middle school-like" event, a note was intercepted in which Germany asked Mexico to join them in war, promising them a part of land back from America if they win. This infuriated Wilson, being the reason they went to war mixed with the attacks on the passenger ships.

    The Fourteen Points / League of Nations
    President Wilson came up with the Fourteen Points. The Fourteen points and League of nations were established after the war for a more safe world. This change was great in that it allowed for a more peaceful world for which the goal was to prevent war. However, in the long-term, World War Two did occur meaning they may not have been too effective.

    The Red Scare directly and greatly affected US foreign and National policy. Americans greatly feared the idea of communism and as a result, were extremely anti-socialist. As a result, immigrants and foreigners became enemies to the American people. An example is Sacco and Vanzetti who were two socialists that weren't given fair trial as traitors and as a result of this great fear they were killed.

    The immigration quotas were another effect of the Red Scare. This greatly changed American politics as immigrants were the backbone of America and now, they were being restricted or kept from even coming into the country.

    The Nine Power treaty affected foreign policy by reconfirming China's Open Door Policy for trade. This continued to allow countries to come into open ports for trade.

    The Five Power Treaty allowed for the creation of limits in navies across the world along with ratios. For example, the Size of the US navy could be 5:3 of that of Japan's. This limited power of some countries allowing for safety in the US.

    Kellog-Briand Pact
    The Kellog-Briand Pact changed not only American foreign policy, but the policies of the world in total. This pact got every country to agree to banning war which had never been done before. However, after Japan invaded Manchuria, it was seen that some countries would try and exploit the pact.
  • Smoot-Hawley Tariff

    Smoot-Hawley Tariff
    This event was more of an American Policy that had a great effect on Foreign Policy. By increasing the Tarrifs substantially, the US turned from a Trading and interacting economy to an Isolationist and Self Sufficient economy. This policy was favored by Herbert Hoover. As a result of the US increasing Tarrifs, foreign countries increased Tarrifs, slowing global trade.

    The New Deal once again became the idea of America being self-sufficient and not relying on foreign help. FDR made the US focus on ourselves rather than fostering trade with foreign nations. He did this through various work programs and laws.
