Helios’ Cattle Description
In The Odyssey, the Cattle of Helios are sacred animals belonging to the Sun God, Helios. These immortal cattle graze on the island of Thrinacia and are guarded by Helios’ daughters, Lampetie and Phaethusa. Odysseus is warned not to harm the cattle, as doing so would provoke Helios’ wrath and lead to dire consequences. Despite Odysseus’ instructions, his starving crew slaughters the cattle while he is asleep, resulting in divine punishment: their ship is destroyed.
