Hoover is inaugurated as the 31st president. Unfortunately, he will be blamed for much of the Great Depression. -
Black Tuesday
The stock market completely collapsed. 16.4 million shares were dumped that day. Many people went into debt, fueling the depression. -
Bank of Tennessee Fails
The bank refusing to give money to an individual caused a panic, and the bank got rushed. This triggered series of bank rushes across the country that caused 1,300 banks to shut down by the end of the year. -
Empire State Building construction finished
This was another major works project that Hoover approved. To this day, it is one of the most famous buildings in New York. -
Roosevelt is elected
As the 32nd President of the United States, Roosevelt tried his best to help the economy in a lot of different ways. -
"Bank Holiday"
Roosevelt shut down banks nationally for a few days in order to inspect the funds. He wanted to know how much money there was to work with. -
FDIC is created
Roosevelt founded the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation in an attempt to provide stability to the economy. -
21 Amendment is passed
Prohibition is no longer in effect. People can now legally purchase and consume alcohol. -
Black Sunday
Because of the Dust Bowl, a huge dust storm develops over the Midwest. Life was very difficult for the farmers during the time period. -
FDR begins Second Term
Roosevelt is inaugurated for his second term of presidency. He continues to implement changes in an attempt to help the depression. -
Social Security Act declared constitutional
Roosevelt was able to pass this act, which was created in attempt to protect those who could not do physical labor. It was much different in 1935 than it is today. -
World War II begins
Germany invades Poland, starting WWII. The war was able to finally bring the United States out of the depression.
