    Intelligence Test: Creation
    Two French psychologists Alfred Binet and Theodore Simon created the first intelligence test. The purpose of the test is to understand the cognitive and intellectual ability of those taking the test. Binet and Simon, because their government asked them to, were trying to figure out a baseline of intelligence for each age level and find children who were below-average intelligence and mental retardation.

    America Gets the Binet-Simon Test
    While Henry Goddard was in Europe studying methods other researchers used while working with mentally challenged children, he learned about the Binet-Simon measurement scales. He takes the test back to America and translates it into English for American educators and psychologists and names the test The Binet and Simon Tests of Intellectual Capacity.

    Lewis M. Terman Revises the Binet-Simon Sclae
    Lewis M. Terman, a psychologist at Stanford University, revised the original Binet-Simon Scale so it can be used on children and some adults and called it the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale. The test consists of both verbal and noverbal subtests with five factors being tested. They are: knowledge, quantitative, reasoning, visual-spatial processing, working memory, and fluid reasoning. Terman modified the original test to find students who were above average levels of intelligence.

    Nation Research Center
    The University of Connecticut and other researchers established the National Research Center on the Gifted and Talented students. Other researchers included in the program came from the University of Virginia, Yale University, and the University of Georgia. Funding for these programs ended in 2012.

    What is a gifted Student? NCLB
    No Child Left Behind Act includes the Javits program. Because of this act, the definition of gifted and talented students is modified. The new definition is: "Students, children, or youth who give evidence of high achievement capability in areas such as intellectual, creative, artistic, or leadership capacity, or in specific academic fields, and who need services and activities not ordinarily provided by the school in order to fully develop those capabilities."

    National Gifted Education Standards
    The National Association for Gifted Children came out with standards for gifted teachers. These standards are to help prepare them to know how and what to teach gifted students. These national gifted education standards are for teacher preparation programs as well as knowledge and skill standards in gifted education classrooms for all teachers. The standards from 2006 will be revised in 2013.
