July 4, 1776, the 13 American colonies severed their political connections to Great Britain. The Declaration summarized the colonists’ motivations for seeking independence. By declaring themselves an independent nation, the American colonists were able to confirm an official alliance with the Government of France and obtain French assistance in the war against Great Britain. -

The war started when the Confederates invaded the Union soldiers at Fort Sumter, South Carolina. The war ended because Robert E. Lee surrendered the last major Confederate army to Ulysses S. Grant. They started this war because the free states and the slave states began to fight. At the end of this war everyone was really sad so President Lincoln cheered them up with his speech. -

The Battle of Fort Sumter was the attack with bombs of Fort Sumter near Charleston, South Carolina by the South Carolina militia, and the return gunfire and subsequent surrender by the United States Army, this was the cause of the civil war. -

Delivering speech 1863 November 19th.
In the speech President Lincoln delivered he talked about current day struggles and how men were all created equal. This was during the American Civil War at a dedication of a military cemetary, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. HIs speech may have been short but it was one of the most memorable speeches in American history. He had also discussed why the Union had to fight and win the Civil War.
