Genghis Khan, born "Temujin", was born between the borders of modern Mongolia and Siberia.

Married

Genghis married a women named Borte at the age of 16 and together, they had 4 sons and some daughters. He also launched her rescue after she was kidnapped. He gained many other wives during his lifetime.

Caused Creation of Written Language

May 12, 1204

Genghis assigned one Uyghur to develope a written language for the Mongols. The language was based on Uyghur script.

Given the title "Genghis Khan"

Jun 13, 1206

After bringing the Mongols together, at a meeting of Mongol nobility, he was presented with this title. It means "Khan of All between the Oceans." This made him their supreme ruler.

Genghis Rules Mongol Empire

Period: Sep 15, 1206 to Oct 22, 1227

Genghis spent these years establishing the Mongol Empire. This included getting rid of all enemies, attacking the Jin Dynasty, besieging the capital of Zhongdu, and a war against the Khwarezm Empire.

Mongols Siege Yinchuan

Jan 16, 1209

Yinchuan is where Genghis Khan's first campaign outside of Mongol took place. They pretended to leave the city, then sieged it. The Xi Xia leader gave them tribute in order to make them leave.

Mongols gain Zhongdu

Oct 21, 1214

In 1214, the Mongols besieged capital. They gained silk, silver, gold, and horses from the Jin ruler.

Died

Aug 18, 1227

Genghis died upon his return to Mongolia after a successful war campaign against the Central Asians. According to legend, a horse threw him to the ground, causing internal injuries he never recovered from.
