Determine "The List"
Development and Instruction work together to determine the development projects for the upcoming year. We consider Course Corrections, Age or Course, ASI, ILT and Teacher Input. -
Identify SMEs and CRs
For development, we must have both a Subject Matter Expert (SME) and a Curriculum Reviewer (CR). The SME is responsible for the bulk of the development. They organize standards, write material, script activities, write discussion prompts, question library and set up gradebook. The CR must review material for adherence, to standards, rigor, accuracy, and correct Brightspace setup. -
Planning Documents
SMEs start the development year planning the course. They take the State Standards and organize them into Modules comprised of Micro-Lessons. CRs review these planning documents to ensure all standards are covered and assessments are appropriate. -
Project Timeline
The Development Specialist assigned to the project takes the planning documents and maps out an entire set of due dates. This schedule starts in mid-September and wraps up late April or early May. Staying on schedule is an important part of the SMEs responsibilities! -
Micro-Lesson Submissions
Time to work through each module. The SME will use a script to submit each Micro-Lesson and accompanying learning activity information. This will be scheduled every 3-4 weeks. SMEs can use original material or OER resources to structure the lessons. SMEs don't need to know any special software - Development Specialists handle the technical aspects of development. -
Overlap Assignments
Once the Micro-Lessons are submitted everyone has work to do. The Development Specialist creates the lessons using Elucidat and Storyline. The SME would move onto the Brightspace items - discussions, question library, quizzes & tests, and gradebook. -
Review and Move On
Time for the CR to step in and work some magic. The Curriculum Reviewer is responsible for reviewing content and Brightspace items. The are checking for two main things - adherence to Standards as well as proper setup within the LMS. SMEs can move onto the next set of Lessons. They may have to revisit material based on the CRs Review. -
Final Wrap-up Procedures
Once all the Micro-Lessons are complete and all the Brightspace items have been created, there are a handful of final procedures:
Copyright & Accessibility Review (external reviewer)

Where is this Course?
We use our courses for Georgia Virtual School. They are created for our GAVS students. But we also use them on the resources site for the world to use! Some courses are also modified for use with Credit Recovery. So your hard work is out there and appreciated by ten of thousands of people!
