August 15, 1947 is when India gained their freedom. Even though Gandhi was not seen in the capital, Nehru and the whole Constituent Assembly saluted him as "the father of the nation". -

He began his last public fast to stop the violence and rioting between the Hindus and Muslims. It lasted for five days. -

Gandhi was assassinated on this day and died exactly at 5:12 pm.
