Galapagos Islands are discovered
Discovered by Fray Tomàs de Berlanga, the Bishop of Panama -
First scientific mission to the Islands
Under the Sicilan captain Alessandro Malaspina, this mission was commissioned by the King of Spain. -
The decline of the tortoise
Approximately 100 thousand tortoises are taken from the islands for food by the whalers. -
Charles Darwin visits the isalnds
It was here that renowned evolutionary scientist Darwin groomed his theories and studied the wildlife. -
Legislations begin
The first legislation to protect the islands was created and enacted. -
Eco-tourism
The galapagos islands began giving tours about the ecosystems. -
The Galapagos National Park and Charles Darwin Research Foundation founded
The Government of Equador declared that 97% of the land as National Park land, thus creating the park. -
National Geographic published
It was from this issue, Gillian and I chose our issue of the Galapagos islands. -
Included in UNESCO
UNESCO declared the islands as a biosphere reserve. -
Reserve created
The Equadorian government created the Marine Resources Reserve of the Galapagos. -
Whale Sanctuary
The islands were declared safe for whales. A sanctuary -
Special Conservation Law approved
A special law for the conservation and sustainable development of the Galapagos Provence was approved. -
Included as a World Heritage Site
The Marine reserve of the Galapagos Islands is now included as a part of the Galapagos World Heritage Site -
