The Maya
The Maya culture flourished in the El Petén region of northern Guatemala but mysteriously abandoned most of their cities there and moved to Mexico's Yucatan peninsula and built cities there. They had no other encounters with civilizations besides the Spanish who conquered almost all of the Maya. The Maya still exist today as a distinct culture. -

The Olmecs
The Olmec are believed to be the earliest Mesoamerican Culture to develop an advanced civilization. They lived in the forests of Veracruz and Tabasco. They are known for the three great city centers built and the beautiful artwork created. The downfall of the Olmec is believed to be due to overpopulation, environmental degradation, and constant warfare. They do not exist today but influenced other Mesoamerican peoples long after they disappeared. -

The Aztec
The Aztec's relative location was current Mexico City. Two major accomplishments of the Aztecs were they were able to create habitable land by using chinampas and they were master builders who created various types of pyramids. In 1521 the Aztec met the Spanish. 100 years after the Aztec disappeared meaning the Aztec no longer exist. -

The Inca
The Inca Empire was located on the west coast of South America, and their empire stretched from Peru to Bolivia and Ecuador. Their Capital was located in Cuzco. Two of their greatest accomplishments were the form of Quecha they used to create a dialect using quipu and the system of roadways created that added up to approximately 15,000 miles crisscrossed the kingdom. They had no written encounters with other civilizations. The Inca still exists to this day. -
