Franz Kafka "The Metamorphosis" Timeline

  • Checking in

    Gregor's mother checks on him knowing he has an early train to catch and is still sleeping.
  • Waking up

    Gregor wakes up realizing he slept through his alarm and missed his train.
  • Discovery

    Once Gregor notices something is clearly wrong he attempts to get up and then discovers his new limbs.
  • Sister Dearest

    Gregor's parents are revolted by his new appearance and avoid him as much as possible. Thankfully his little sister still feels compassion for him and brings Gregor food twice a day. During this time Gregor discovers his new pallet of rotten foods.
  • Realization

    When Gregor's mother checks on him he tries responding to her, when he does this he realizes something is wrong with his voice.
  • Chaos

    Once Gregor reveals his new self his mother faints and his boss rapidly leaves. When Gregor tries to stop his boss and explain his father runs him back into his room.
  • Bad timing

    Just as Gregor makes the realization that he cannot move his new appendages his boss shows up at his home and rings the doorbell.
  • Horror

    Gregor's boss enters the house and demands he come out of his room to explain himself. Gregor understandably refuses but his parents have now joined the quarl and he is forced to reveal himself.
  • Deep Sleep

    Once his father chases him into his room Gregor falls into a deep sleep. When he awakes he scuttles aimlessly around his room trying to not think about his new appearance.
  • A Month later

    A month has passed since Gregor's transformation at this point in the story. He has become uglier and reeks from what he is eating and the lack of cleaning.
  • Rearranging

    Gregor's mother and sister decide he needs more space in his room to crawl around. They decided to remove all of Gregor's furniture from his room so he had as much room as possible.
  • Light Headed

    Gregor realizes what his mother and sister are doing and comes out of hiding. In order to show his mother and sister he doesn't want them to take all the furniture out of his room he clings to a picture on the wall. When his mother sees him she faints.
  • Scurrying out

    Once the mother faints the sister runs to the living room to get her some medicine. For whatever reason Gregor follows his sister in her pursuit to the living room. His sister gets the medicine but flees back to Gregor's room so fast that she doesn't notice he's out.
  • Daddy's Home

    Gregor is now just standing in the living room while his sister deals with his unconscious mother. As he is out his father comes home and starts chasing him around and throwing apples at him.
  • OUCH!

    While Gregor's father is chasing him and throwing apples he lodges one right in Gregor's back. The pain temporarily paralyzes Gregor and leaves him defenseless.
  • Saved By The Bell

    Right as Gregor is injured his mother comes to his rescue. She begs her father to spare Gregor and leave him be.
  • Healing

    The apple does more damage than Gregor realizes and it takes a month to heal the wound.
  • Shut In Again

    Gregor can now only see his family through a little crack in his door. While peaking he witnesses his mother and sister get in a fight about cleaning his room.
  • New Help

    The family hires a new maid since they are all too tired to deal with the care of the household. The cleaning lady calls Gregor a "dung beetle" which he takes offense to. He tries to scare her but he ends up getting fought off with a chair.
  • Junk Drawer

    Over time Gregor's room becomes the house's junk drawer and becomes filled with miscellaneous items. At first, it's almost like a playground to crawl on. But over time Gregor becomes depressed and doesn't eat.
  • Envy

    Gregor watches his family eating at the table and envys their feast.
  • Talented Violinist

    Gregor hears his sister playing her violin and creeps out of his room. He attempts to ask his sister to play her violin in his room but his father catches him.
  • Exhausted

    At this point, Gregor is exhausted and in a deep state of depression. Gregor lies on the living room floor and his family runs and hides in their rooms. While he is laying there he overhears his family discussing how to dispose of him.
  • The End

    Depressed and feeling betrayed Gregor goes back into his room. He later hears his sister lock his door and he starts to wish he coukd just dissapear. At three in the morning, Gregor dies.
