Magna Carta
A document written in the 13th century that still has impact to this day. The Magna Carta was written by barons who wanted to have the rights to own property and to have individual rights. This affected America because it inspired and justified actions to the liberties' defense. -
Virginia House of Burgesses
A meeting in which could make laws, (which could be vetoed) by governors. This house/meeting continued to take place until 1624 when Virginia became its own colony. An interesting fact would be that the Burgesses could make their own laws and agreed with many people just like today's government. -
Mayflower Compact
The Mayflower Compact was a document signed by 41 English colonists and was the first written framework of government in what was then the United States. It included laws that the people should follow just like the Constitution. -
Fundamental Orders of Connecticut
The Fundamentals Orders of Connecticut is considered the first constitution in the new world. It established an independent rule of law and gave equality to the people. -
Thomas Hobbes (Leviathan)
Leviathan argues civil peace and social unity are achieved the best by establishing a commonwealth through a social contract. And Hobbes' ideas of a commonwealth is as an ¨artifical person" and publicly mimics the human body as a whole. -

The Enlightment was a movement in Europe that shaped politics, science, and philosophies. This movement alos inspired great philsophers like John Locke, Baron de Monstesquieu, Voltaire, Rousseau, and Thomas Hobbes. -
Glorious Revolution
This revolution is considered Glorious because it overthrew a king know as King James II. This event caused great rejocement in not only the people but also it brought a new permanent power to the English constitution. -
John Locke (Two Treaties on Government)
This book has 2 parts to it. The first part was called First Treatise and it included going head-to-head against patriachalism. The second part was called Second Treatise included the creation of a theory that was based on the contract and natural rights theory. -
English Bill of Rights
An doucment/act passed by the English Parliament. This gave people rights and residents of a Constitutional Monarchy were entilted in the late 17th century. It also restates certain laws of the English Crown to seek Parliament. -
Montesquieu Sepration of Powers
He believed that all things all made of laws that never change. And according to Montesquieu, there should be three types of government. (moanrchy, republic, and despotism) -
Rousseau Disclosure of Inequality
This describes modern nature and human civilization. This also distinguishes two different types of inequality: natural and moral.
