Bombing of Nagasaki and Hiroshima
During the final stage of WWII, the United States detonated two bombs in Japan in an attempt to force surrender and the Ally victory. This is successful, but results in the death of 129,000 to 226,000 Japanese civilians which possibly could have been avoided. This bombing is touted to have been partially done to threaten the U.S.S.R. with an example of U.S. potential, although Truman insists this is not the case.

Truman Doctrine Announced
The Truman Doctrine is announced to the U.S. Congress. When passed it would grant $400 million in aid to Greece and Turkey to battle Communist terrorism. President Harry S. Truman implements the act on May 22.
