The earthquake killed 22,000 people and made one-sixth of the population homeless, the people of Guatemala were clear about their needs. Not food, as they had their harvest safely gathered, but aluminium sheeting to build shelters. They also learned how to build housing to withstand future earthquakes. Amount raised: £1,300,000 -
Indo-China Emergency Appeal
British aid workers discovered the horror of the ‘Killing Fields’ – one-fifth of the Cambodian population had been slaughtered by the country’s own government. DEC Appeal for Indonesia, Philippines and Vietnam
Indonesia, Philippines and Vietnam appeal video In one week from Saturday 26 September the East Asia region was hit by 3 separate natural disasters; Typhoon Ketsana swept through the Philippines and onto Vietnam causing extensive damage and flooding; in Indonesia an earthquake registering 7.6 on the Richter scale struck western Sumatra followed by an aftershock of 6.6 a day later. DEC Haiti Earthquake Appeal
A devastating 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti on January 12th 2010. It was the worst earthquake to hit the country in 200 years. Up to three million people live in the area worst hit by the quake, which centred 10 miles south-west of the densely populated capital Port-Au-Prince. The latest estimates are 230,000 people killed, 300,000 injured and 1.2 million left needing emergency shelter. The DEC Haiti Earthquake appeal raised an incredible £101 million. Pakistan Floods
Over 20 million people were affected by the devastating floods that started in the mountains of north west Pakistan in late July and then spread over hundreds of miles down the Indus River in August. The floods damaged or destroyed 1.9 million homes as well as schools, health clinics, small businesses and crops. The appeal remains open until January 2011 and you can find further details here.
