    The cold war came with competition between the two powers. The space race was very important. A Russian ballistic missile launched Sputnik, the world’s first artificial satellite and the first man-made object to be placed into the Earth’s orbit.     On May 16, 1963, a federal district court in Alabama ordered the University of Alabama to admit African American students Vivien Malone and James Hood during its summer session. The court's decision ensured a showdown with federal authorities and Alabama Governor George Wallace who didn't want school desegregation. On June 11, when wallace blocked the students' entrance by standing himself before the doorway of Foster Auditorium. He ultimately yielded when President Kennedy told him.

    The March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, the March on Washington, was held in Washington D.C. The purpose of the march was to advocate for the civil and economic rights of African Americans. people like MLK and Malcom X stepped up to protect their people and their rights.
  • President Kennedy assassinated

    President Kennedy assassinated
    President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. Crowds were crowded there to see the President and his wife. suddenly everyone heard gun shots and there President Kennedy was lying in his wife's lap. They rushed him to the hospital, but it was too late and he was presumed dead.

  • Kent State Shooting

    Kent State Shooting
    Four Kent State University students were killed and nine were injured when members of the Ohio National Guard opened fire on a crowd gathered to protest the Vietnam War. In its immediate aftermath, a student-led strike forced the temporary closure of colleges and universities across the country.

    Relations between China and America had been tarnished due to the cold war issues. 15 American table tennis players, team officials and spouses crossed a bridge from Hong Kong into China. Before this Americans were not let in to China, and this eased relations.
  • Watergate Scandal

    several burglars were arrested in the office of the Democratic National Committee, located in the Watergate complex of buildings in Washington, D.C. The prowlers were connected to President Richard Nixon’s reelection campaign, and they had been caught wiretapping phones and stealing documents. Nixon tried to cover it up immensely, but it ultimately lead to his resignation.

    A legal case that the supreme court ruled that unduly restrictive state regulation of abortion is unconstitutional. This was a big step towards rights with women because they no longer had no other option, and they were not being strongly regulated. this is also becoming more relevant to this periods time.
  • End of Vietnam War

    Direct U.S. military involvement ended on 15 August 1973 as a result of the Case–Church Amendment passed by the U.S. Congress. The capture of Saigon by the NVA in April 1975 marked the end of the war, and North and South Vietnam were reunified the following year.
