Five Historical Events in Education

  • Montessori Method

The Montessori method gives respect for the child and allows the child to explore their interests to mastery if they desire. It also allows and encourages child independence which is an extremely important skill to have throughout life. “The Montessori Method fosters rigorous, self-motivated growth for children and adolescents in all areas of their development—cognitive, emotional, social, and physical.” (American Montessori Society, n.d)
  • Brown vs. Board of Education

    Figure 2. (Encyclopedia Britannica, n.d.)
Separate but equal was found to be unconstitutional. This event was just the beginning of desegregation. It paved the road for many more critical events in U.S history. Without this event, the US would not be even close to having equal education for all people.
  • The Elementary and Secondary Education Act

This event in history is another event that is helping to bring equality to education. It has attempted to bridge the education gap between low income and high income families by giving grants to schools for many things. Some of the grants cover things such as funding libraries so books are easily accessible to students and programs for gifted students as well as the arts programs.
  • Individuals with Disabilities Education Act

The individuals with Disabilities Education Act is another event that has helped to equalize education for all. This act provides early intervention starting at birth to allow children with disabilities to get a headstart. It also provides tools to improve education for children and gives protection to children and parents with disabilities.
  • Online Learning

Online learning has allowed for greater opportunities for students. “Research shows increased depth of understanding and retention of course content” (Stern, p. 4). It gives a way for students of all ages to still attend school when they can't go to the actual building. By being completely online, it has more emphasis on writing and technology use which are two very important skills. Students have more time to process and reflect on assignments.
