This was an agreement but not formal alliance between france and britian. -
Triple alliances
Germany + Aust-H + Italy
This meant if any of the 3 got in a war,even if they started it themselves,the other 2 were bound to join in the war on their side. (In the event,Italy backed out in August 1914). -
Triple entente / Anglo-russian entente
Triple entente: Russia, France and Britian. The counter the increasing threat form Germany.
Anglo-russian entente:This was an agreement between Britian and Russia. -
Nationaism
Nations were looking for ways to express colonial ideas. -
Militarism
This is not just an arms race, but also a government's attitude of mind, seeing war as a valid means of foreign policy. (This often includes the influence of government by the generals.) All the nations of Europe were militaristic, but the governments of Germany and Austria-Hungary were especially so. -
Imperialsm
Another cause of WWI was imperialism. Britain and France, and Germany and France had almost gone to war over clashes in North Africa. -
