Constitution
This was the date that the Constitution was signed. It wasn't util at least one year later it was raftified because 9 out of the 13 states had to approve of it. This historic document was made because Articles of Confederation had too many weakness which left the government exposed. The Constitution gave us the three branches of government, which are kept in check through the process of vchecks and balances. The constitution also gave the states some power. -
Louisianna Purchase
President Jefferson bought the Louisianna Territory from France. Jefferson did not want to buy land from France, because of his constitutional views. No where in the Consitution though does it state that the president cannot buy land from forgien countries. Jefferson buying the lan from France exercises his power over the other branches of government. -
Homested Act
The Homestead Act, was activated during in 1862, provided that any adult citizen, or intended citizen, who had never baired arms against the U.S. government could claim 160 acres of surveyed government land. People who claimed land were required to “improve” the plot by building a dwelling and cultivating the land. After 5 years on the land, the original filer was entitled to the property, free and clear, except for a small registration fee. -
Congress Funds Railroads
Union Pasific Railroad was the first railroad sponcered by the Federal government. Tracks were first laid in Omaha, Nebraska, he railroad company was given 20 square miles of land around the tracks and a generaous finincial loan, ranging from $16,000 to $48,000. Fraud eventually started to become an issue so it was harder for congress to fund this, but congress exerciaed its powers here. -
Dawes Act
Attempt to force the Native Americans into reservations. Gave 160 acres of land to each head of families to farm and be restricted in. Most of the Indians were not okay with that because they were the type that would follow where the buffalo would go. -
Platt Amendment
he Platt amendment was established after the Spanish American war when Cuba was freed from control of the Spanish. This amendment gave America the right to intervene in Cuba’s policies so that if Cuba was in debt to another nation America could interfere with troops to enforce the payment of taxes to relieve the debt so that Cuba would not fall under control of another nation. -
Securities and Exchange Comission
This organization was created by the Securities Exchange Act of 1934 and is used to help support the federal securities laws that were created. It helps to regulate the stock market and stock exchanges so that it would not get out of control. It also worked to enforce the Securities Act of 1934. -
Gold Reserve Act
This act was made to benefit the nation in escaping the depression. This act took all the gold and placed it in the national treasury under federal control. It then took the nation off the gold standard. This allowed more paper money to be printed an circulate throughout the country. -
Works Progress Admistration
The Works Progress Aministration was led by Harry Hopkins, this work organization was by far the most promising and most successful of all the job relief organizations. It spent $11 billion on thousands of projects on buildings, bridges, and roads. It generated jobs for nearly 9 million people. -
Voting Act of 1965
This act was passed by LBJ and prohibited states from abridging the right for one to vote based on sex or race. This act specifically went against the literacy tests that had been previously used saying that they were unconstitutional.
