Business leaders overthrew the Queen and sought annexation of Hawaii. The U.S. Navy sent a single cruiser, the USS Charleston, to capture the island of Guam, then under Spanish control. They surrendered without resistance and the island passed into American control. Purchased from Spain following military victory; independent in 1946. -
