Prenatal
A fetus as young as 20 weeks old can be either stimulated or irritated by sounds. -
Birth
At birth, a baby hears a large variety of sounds but prefers the sounds of a human voice. -
2 months
A 2 month old infant will begin to coo and make vowel-like noises. -
6 months
A 6 month old infants will began to repeat vowel-consonant combinations, which we call babbling. -
12 months (1st Birthday)
A toddler will say their first recognizable word and by 13 months will be able to comprehend around 50 words! -
18-24 months (2nd Birthday!)
A toddler will gain on average an amazing one or two word productions per day between 18-24 months of age and will begin to speak with two-word utterances. -
2-5 Years
A preschooler makes steady progress in learning grammatical rules as well as a steady increase in the rate at which they are learning words. -
6-12 Years
By the time a child is age 6, he or she will have an understanding of the meaning of about 10,000 words! The child will also be able to hold full conversations and speak in complete and elaborate sentences.
