    Freud publishes work on repression
Repression was a defense mechanism (one of many) and was when the ego managed a situation that was deemed uncomfortable by the superego by forcing it into the unconscious mind. For Freud, the unconscious was significantly more of the mind than the conscious. Repressed things would often show up later in other forms. The work of the psychoanalyst was to help uncover these repressed memories. Freud originally said all repression was of memories but later said it was of uncomfortable desires too.
