The tank was named by the British for the American Civil War General William Tecumseh Sherman. The M4 was an adaptation of the M3 Lee medium tank. The US Military used this tank during WW2, and it became a widely used tank for the US during the war. It sported a 75mm main gun, and was faster than a lot of tanks at the time, which made it very versatile. The design was revised several times to add new guns to the body.
